File-sharing transformed into file-giving for the holidays

November 21, 2002. San Francisco, CA.

First Time Consumers Can Easily Buy PC Games as Gifts and Have Them Delivered Directly To The Recipient’s Computer
Doing your holiday shopping online is super convenient. Free shipping with your online purchase is nice too. Now, for the first time, Trymedia Systems is introducing free digital delivery of PC videogames directly to a gift recipient’s computer. Beginning on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 28), consumers will have the ability to purchase computer games online at Trygames and have them delivered to friends or family within minutes. Traditionally, games and software sold online could either be downloaded only by the purchaser or shipped in box format to a gift recipient.

Trygames offers downloadable PC games that run the gamut from hardcore games like Beach Head 2002, Robot Arena, and Pearl Harbor: Defend the Fleet, to classics like Monopoly, Operation and Scrabble, and children’s software titles such as Putt Putt Travels Through Time and Candy Land Adventure. Prices range from US$5 to $39.95, with most games under $20. Currently all games at the site can be downloaded for free trial with the option to purchase the content when the trial expires. Beginning on Thanksgiving Day, Trymedia will add a feature that allows consumers to easily purchase a downloadable game as a gift for someone else. The gift recipient will receive immediate e-mail notification that a gift has been purchased and simple instructions on how to retrieve the game online.

“Trymedia’s ActiveMARK technology makes it easy for consumers to download and share digital content legally,” said Gabe Zichermann, Trymedia’s VP of Strategy and Communications. “Now that more and more publishers are distributing their games digitally, we thought consumers ought to be able to make their gift deliveries digitally too. Even magic reindeer would be hard-pressed to deliver a game of Yahtzee this quickly.”

When consumers use an ActiveMARK enabled game or software program, their content can be transferred from one person to another, either online or on disc, and it automatically reverts to trial mode – enabling legal, secure, person-to-person filesharing. Trymedia works with its software clients to insure appropriate distribution through the Internet, Peer-to-Peer Networks, CD/DVD channels and email programs.

Trymedia Systems enables the secure monetization of games and software on the Internet, Peer-to-Peer Networks and via CD/DVD. The company’s ActiveMARK technology has been tested in over 5 million downloads, powering secure digital revenues for leading videogame and entertainment software publishers. Founded in 1999, Trymedia is headquartered in San Francisco and maintains offices in Europe.
