Consumers Play Up to 45 Minutes of Games Daily
While Commuting Reveals New Survey
March 9, 2005. San Francisco, CA. Game Developers Conference.
Trymedia Research Also Shows Extensive Game Play During Air Travel
Almost one third of all commuters play games during their daily travel to work, according
to a new survey on game playing habits conducted by Trymedia Systems, secure digital distribution
services provider and operator of the world’s largest distribution network for downloadable
games.
The “Travel and Commute Gaming” study, an online survey of more than 8,000 game
players, showed that 30 percent of commuters turned on their laptops, clicked on their mobile
phones or used their portable gaming device to play games. Of those who played games to and
from work, the average length of game play was 23 minutes per trip.
The survey also polled those who travel by airplane about their gaming habits. While reading,
sleeping and watching in-flight movies remain popular, 30 percent of those who took at least
one air trip per year said they often played games and 16 percent said they played games
every time they flew. Doing work on an airplane was last on the list of in-flight activities.
Other results include:
- Mobile phones were the most popular platform for commuters to play games, followed
by laptops and portable gaming devices.
- Car and subway/bus commuters played the most games while train and ferry riders played the
least.
- Those who played games to/from work generally spent more time commuting.
- When traveling by airplane, laptop computers were the most often used platform to play games,
followed by portable gaming devices.
“The survey results reflect the fast-growing popularity of games being downloaded
to PC and mobile phones,” said Alex Torrubia, Co-Founder and CEO of Trymedia. “The
availability and selection of games available for download is already huge and still expanding.”
Additional data from the survey will be shared at Trymedia’s GDC sponsored session, “Publishing
and Distributing PC Games on the Internet,” on Wednesday, March 9 from Noon to 1 p.m.
in Room 2022 on site at the Moscone West Convention Center.
Trymedia’s ActiveMARK® technology allows consumers to easily download games and
play offline. Consumers can also make backup copies of their games and share them with family
and friends. Each time an ActiveMARK-enabled game is shared, it automatically reverts to
trial mode, allowing the subsequent user to play the game for a limited amount of time before
purchase. ActiveMARK also allows consumers to securely share, back up and play games on multiple
computers whether the content is delivered by CD/DVD-ROM or via download.
The survey was conducted between February 24 and March 3 through Trygames.com, Trymedia’s
consumer gaming site. The survey polled 8,223 gamers worldwide.
